Mailbox is Birmingham, England’s luxury Shopping Centre, with around thirty top brands such as Boss, Calvin Klein, Emporio Armani, Gieves and Hawkes, Heal’s and Tommy Hilfiger. Apart from the designer shopping and international brands, there are also salons, restaurants and spas in which you can relax between some serious high-end shopping. You will even find BBC Birmingham in the Mall, which includes a visitor centre and blue room, where you can get your picture taken and have a wander around various sets.

Don’t let the relatively small number of stores fool you, though. Mailbox is one of a new generation of Malls which also holds residential housing, restaurants, hotels (two in fact: Malmaison and AC Hotel) and offices in one massive complex, the distinctive ‘cube’ building being part of the Centre. So although you couldn’t spend an entire day purely shopping, there is so much else to do; you could happily spend a weekend in the lap of luxury without ever leaving the complex.

At its heart though, is the wonderful luxury Mall. It is beautifully finished and oozes quality, all anchored by a stunning Harvey Nichols department store. The Mall opened in 1998, with a major refurbishment occurring in 2013 during which the cube was built, and was dubbed the Mailbox due to the fact that the main Mall section now occupies a building which once housed the old Birmingham Royal Mail sorting office.

The outdoor section of the Mailbox houses all of the restaurants, of which there are two levels. You can enjoy high-end steakhouses or delicious Peri peri chicken, among many others. The restaurants all have outdoor seating, so you can relax and eat while you watch the picturesque Worcester and Birmingham Canal flow past. It is a lovely setting and a great way to spend an evening in Birmingham.

While we could never have a good old mallrat around this Mall, like settle in and let the day go by, it is one of those Centres which just puts a huge smile on my face as I enter. It would never be my first choice, with the massive Bullring and stunning new Birmingham New Street Station only a two minute walk away, but if I had the money I could certainly book myself into one of the hotels and blow thousands in the Mailbox. It is certainly one of those aspirational Malls that I absolutely love visiting. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in the Midlands, even if it’s just for the experience.
